Grassroots
Grassroots is a monthly, tabloid-size journal in English that carries selected field reports, its own as well as the best selected from newspapers, that depict the human conditions. The first issue of Grassroots was released in May1999. In order to reach out to provincial and district newspapers, which serve small rural and urban communities, it was considered imperative to bring out Grassroots in Hindi the language of masses. The first issue came out in August 1999. To encourage journalists to report on grassroots' issues, PII awards a prize of Rs. 5,000 to the best story every month by the PII.  
 
 
Vidura
Vidura is a professional quarterly magazine in English, with a section in Hindi, that reports and comments on trends and developments in the media. It has completed 40 years. The quarterlies, People and Hum Log, were started from April 2000 as part of the media advocacy project on population, development and gender.

Best of Grassroots:
This Volume contains selection from the first two years of the English Grassroots.They cover a wide range, like panchayati raaj and other arenas of empowerment, education, agriculture, tribal communities, caste and religious discrimination, child and gender issues. We hope they will serve as models to aspiring journalists in the struggle to maintain the social relevance of our profession.

Following were the worst ever communal riots since partition, media , particularly the electronic was at recieving end of much criticism for the way the riots were covered. To debate this issue of how the riots were handled by the media PII had come come up with a workshopand hence this volume.
